UPDATE 6/1/19:  Thank you to the Hachette Book Group for your generous donation of 500 books!  We will continue to distribute book bags throughout the summer.  Thanks to all who have worked so hard to bring books to children.
UPDATE:

Up With Books is so  grateful for the very generous donation of 3,500 books from Houghton, Mifflin, Harcourt.  We will now be delivering almost 1,000 book bags this summer!    Thank you also to those who have so kindly supported us in our mission to bring new books to children.

March 2019

In the next few months, we will begin filling tote bags with books for children to read over the summer.  Our summer program is designed to enable at-risk students to have access to books during the summer months.  Children from economically disadvantaged communities lose summer skills over the summer months because they lack access to books.  Students who lose reading ability over the summer rarely catch up.  Over time, the summer learning slide can add up to the equivalent of three years of reading loss by the end of fifth grade.

A lack of academic achievement is a key reason students drop out of high school.  Those who do not have a high school diploma will earn less than those who do and significantly less than those with a college degree.  In addition, 78% of juvenile crime is committed by high school dropouts.  Two-thirds of prison inmates do not have a high school diploma.  To break the cycle of poverty and illiteracy, we need to keep children in school and encourage further education and to continue reading throughout their life.

At Up With Books, our goal is to engage the children in reading and build upon that to keep their reading levels at their grade levels.  Children growing up in homes with at least 20 books get three years more schooling than children from homes without books.  The most successful way to improve the reading achievement of low-income children is to increase their access to books.  Creating a steady stream of new, age-appropriate books has been shown to nearly triple interest in reading within months.

Thank you to First Book and Dollar Days for supporting our program.  We currently have funding for 300 book bags!

Join us in providing this opportunity for more children in our communities.  With just $20, you can provide one more book bag with 5 books, coloring book and crayons, a small toy, and parent literacy information.    Please consider donating today or email us for more information.

For many, summer is a time of relaxation; but for children living in poverty, summer months present a threat. Children from low-income households lose reading skills during summer break because they lack access to books in their homes. Up With Books, Inc. promotes reading and literacy by providing  books for underprivileged children.
Up With Books serves children who are most at-risk for summer learning setback. We created a summer reading program, Every Summer Has a Story, to provide a bag full of books to children in need.  Up With Books strives to empower low-income children to close the reading achievement gap, which provides them with the opportunity to overcome the vicious cycle of poverty.

Students who lose reading ability over the summer rarely catch up.  Over time, the summer learning slide can add up to the equivalent of three years of reading loss by the end of fifth grade.  A lack of academic achievement is a key reason students drop out of high school.  Those who do not have a high school diploma will earn less than those who do, and significantly less than those with a college degree.  In addition, 78% of juvenile crime is committed by high school dropouts.  Two-thirds of prison inmates do not have a high school diploma.
Children from low-income households suffer from lower school achievement than their middle-class peers. One of the largest contributors to this disparity is the lack of continued learning during the summer. Studies have shown that providing children with books for summer reading allows them to gain, rather than lose, reading skills over the summer.

Up With Books believes that every summer has a story. For children living in poverty, that story can be one of lost opportunity. We invite you to join us in helping children write a different story for themselves. Together, we can help children experience a summer of growth and overcome barriers to learning.
